Memories of National Day 2007
November 19, Monaco's National Day, came and went quietly, like most other such holidays, which is never a bad thing. For more on the activities in the Palace square, see editor Celia Sankar's column as she was present for the ceremony. As for us, we are not partial to standing around outdoors on a chilly morning waiting to be waved at by anybody. Leave for us the nocturnal roving in Monaco's warm, elegant halls.

Nevertheless, I'm happy to share these memories of the morning's proceedings captured by our friend Ed, a photographer who has the eye of an artist. Also, there's a panorama shot by a member of the French battalion which joined Monaco to help mark the National Day. Frédéric Buttigier had the rare privilege of photographing the event from inside the Palace and was accosted by our editor as soon as he emerged from those hallowed precincts. In case you are wondering, the answer is, yes, he did capture up close and intimate photos of the princely family during his time with them on the balcony; and, no, he is not sharing.

UPDATE: Subsequent to this column going online, Frédéric Buttigier kindly sent along a photo he took capturing the princely family inside the palace. It's too large to add to the page, but you can see it here.

Congratulations to all winners. Keep up the good work and keep clean. In this time of so many conflicts and disappointments in leadership, we need heroes to look up to whom we can look at and say this is what's best about us as human beings.

Dear Meseret: Amidst misunderstandings and conflicts that sometimes ended in inflicting deep wounds and evoking emotional affliction amongst us, you and your athletic compatriot friends didn’t fail to present us with the most joyous and ecstatic moments in our lives.
