Monaco International Fireworks 2008

It's summer, and so you know what that means for the night sky in Monaco: endless explosions of colour.

You see them almost nightly over Larvotto beach signalling either the end of a concert at Le Sporting by some international star such as Celine Dion, or Carlos Santana or Chicago (all of whom are in town this season), or the climax of some major high society do, such as the Bal d'Ete or the Red Cross Ball.

We particularly enjoy the pyrotechnics on the other side of town, over at Port Hercules. These shows are prepared by foreign teams who compete in the Monaco International Fireworks Contest. This year, England was the first up (July 9), with what we thought was a fanciful display that made entertaining use of the lower and upper levels of the sky, nicely synchronised with music in a wide range of moods. On a scale of one to ten, we would give them a seven. So, we were surprised after the final blast to hear what can only be described as tepid applause and a brief sounding of horns by the yachts in the harbour. It was all the more surprising since the Brits make up a significant part of expats here and we've witnessed more uproarious appreciation of firework displays by other countries.

But the message is out there – pyrotechnicians beware: Monaco is a fastidious audience and you need to come with absolutely your very best. We can't wait to see how Poland will fare when they come on July 25.

Nice to see the video for those of us who can't make it over there. Will there be videos of all the fireworks?

Don't know where this writer was standing, but where we were, people cheered loudly and really appreciated the lights display by the English team.

Just to let you know, it's not just Monaco residents who look at the fireworks. People come in from surrounding areas for the night out when they know the fireworks are on.
