Herculis 2008: The last stop before Beijing

Records fell, spirits soared and a packed Stade Louis II applauded lustily as Herculis 2008 marked the final stop for athletes going for gold in Beijing.

The darling of the night was reigning Olympic and World pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia, who broke her own record when she cleared 5.4 metres. Also captivating the audience was Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell, who after months of injuries, rose to his personal best this season, covering 100 metres in just 9.82 seconds, the fastest time ever at Herculis and the third fastest this year.

"I'm feeling very good. I'm working real hard, and I'm getting better and better each day," Powell said.

With that kind of dedication from his peers in the world of sports, fans across the globe should have a sizzling month when the Beijing Olympic Games open on August 8.
