Blake's "Fragments" on show in Monaco

Canadian-born sculptor Blake opened up his studio to the media (Sep 17), ahead of inviting Monaco art lovers to his first show in the principality this year. Some of the pieces on display were part of his exhibition "Fragments", which ran in England at the Canterbury Cathedral and the London bourse, and in Chelsea, New York. Much of the collection, though, is from "The Figure", a brand new body of work, fresh from the foundry.

"It's wonderful to show here because I get to close down the whole road in front of the studio and create a neighbourhood fête, a party," said the artist, who goes by just one name.

While the latest collection "explores the truth, beauty and hope of the human form", the pieces from "Fragments" have a more somber intent. They protest the glorification of war and confront viewers with the devastation caused by land mines. Blake, who argues artists have a duty to engage in social activism, pledged proceeds of "Fragments" to charities which help victims of land mines and work towards clearing minefields.

The Monaco show runs for 10 days starting Sep 18.
