Family fun at Port Hercule
With the strains of Richard Wagner's Ride of the Valkyrie wafting on balmy Mediterranean breezes, Germany entertained the crowd which gathered at Port Hercule to see the night sky burst into colour as the 2007 International Musical Fireworks Competition got underway (July 06). After some 30 minutes of sparkling lights that elicited more than a few "oohs" and "aahs", even the mega yacths in Monaco's harbour showed their appreciation by sounding their horns.

Then it was time to party, with the band on the Albert I quay striking up hot Latin and Caribbean tunes. For the third year, this promenade, which has Prince Albert II's palace as its backdrop, has been converted into a summer playground. Attractions for the kids include boat rides, trampolines, artificial rock climbing, and a host of fairground games.

The children's park remains open daily (from 11 am to midnight) right till the end of August. The fireworks competition, meanwhile, will continue on July 26 with France's presentation and on August 10 with a display from Russia. The eagerly awaited final entry will be on August 22 by Hong Kong, renowned for its extravagant pyrotechnics.
