Fight AIDS Monaco gala 2007
Princess Stephanie made the call on behalf of those suffering as a result of AIDS and Monaco's well-heeled responded.

With the help of French artiste Patrick Bruel, the princess' charity, Fight AIDS Monaco, staged its annual fund raising dinner on July 20 at Le Sporting Monte Carlo. Proceeds will go towards the organization's project to construct a house for those who are affected by the disease and don't have a home or need to get away from the stresses of life.

The facility, which the princess said will be the first of its kind in Europe, is patterned after Housing Works in New York, a not-for-profit corporation providing housing, health care, advocacy, job training, and vital supportive services to homeless New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS. The Fight AIDS Monaco project, "La Maison de Vie" ("House of Life"), will be set in Provence, France. The opening is planned for 2008.

Princess Stephanie, who was named a UNAIDS special representative last December, said she became involved with the cause in 2003 when a personal friend became infected with HIV.

At the gala, Bruel entertained the audience with 18 selections, including "Marre de cette nana-là" ("Fed up with that chick"), the 1980s single that first brought him acclaim as a singer, although he was already well known as a film, stage and television actor. The event was patronized by Monaco sovereign Prince Albert II. Seated to his left at the head table was Charlene Wittstock, a member of South Africa's fifth-finishing Sydney Olympics swim relay team, who has often been photographed with the prince since they first appeared before international cameras at the Turin Olympics in February 2006.
