Monaco Medieval Day 2007: The Real Deal
If you climbed the 70-plus steps up the Rock to the Prince's palace in Monaco on July 21, you would have leapt back into history.

Knights in suits of chain mail and discreet wenches with their hair hidden under bonnets roamed the straw-lined cobblestone streets. Blacksmiths were out stoking fires and pounding away to fashion iron implements. The fellow manning the pillory jokingly offered free tongue and nose piercings with crude tools. Jugglers and lepers and little girls carding wool, they were all there.

With "Medieval Day on the Rock", which is into only its second year, Monaco stages a Renaissance fair in an enchanting setting. The backdrop is the palace of Prince Albert II, whose ancestors have occupied the Rock for over 700 years, making the Grimaldi family the longest ruling house in Europe.

“Very authentic, very realistic, and very enjoyable,” one visitor from Gibraltar, the other "rock", said of the celebration.

After experiencing the bagpipe-driven festivities at nightfall, we at Monaco Revue resolved to circle the event on our calendar next year. We'll be there, and in costume too!
