F1 men strut their stuff in Monaco

Two days before they were scheduled to burn up the tracks on the world's most prestigious circuit, the men of Formula One scorched the Amber Fashion catwalk in Monaco.

Venturing onto decidedly unfamiliar territory, the drivers demonstrated the brave spirits that have made them tops in their sport as they strutted before an audience which included top models Liz Hurley and Naomi Campbell, F1 honchos Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Britore, as well as billionaires Sir Philip Green, Lakshmi Mittal, and Dr Vijay Mallya, as well as Prince Albert II of Monaco.

Lewis Hamilton, David Coulthard, Nico Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Jenson Button, and Adrian Sutil displayed alternating shyness and panache as they ushered in FORM, a new men's line by Ecclestone's daughter Petra. Golden boy Hamilton, who deplored his recent attempt at acting as "wooden", seemed more relaxed on the catwalk, even managing to throw a wink to photographers.

Later, the wives, girlfriends and daughters of the drivers joined professional models in a parade of swimsuits from Hurley's line and evening wear by Monaco-based designer Isabell Kristensen.

The Amber Fashion event organizers handed a cheque for nearly US$1.5 million (about 950,000 euros) to David Furnish of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, for use in programmes in India.

Items on the block included an invitation to Elton John's 2009 Oscar night reception, a Chopard unisex watch from the singer’s collection (picked up by Mallya for some US$150,000), a 1974 vintage Corvette previously used by Sharon Stone, and a week on Mallya's mega yacht the Indian Empress.

Prince Albert is always nicely dressed. I'm surprised that none of the men are wearing hats. Celebrities are wearing dress hats. For example, Brad Pitt and Samuel L. Jackson.

Prince Albert is always dressed nicely. I was surprised that there were no hats on the catwalk. There is a new hat trend. Celebrities are wearing hats. For example, Brad Pitt, Kevin Costner, Samuel L. Jackson and Carlos Santana; hats of all shapes, sizes and styles.
