The Prince Rainier III Limited Edition 81

He walked 81 years in this world, and to commemorate the life of one of Monaco's greatest rulers, German luxury goods maker Mont Blanc has created a limited edition of 81 pens named after Prince Rainier III.

The 18-carat white gold fountain pen decorated with 996 diamonds and 92 rubies costs close to US$300,000.

The collectors item is a fitting tribute, remarked Prince Albert II, who ascended the Monaco throne upon his father's death in April 2005. At a gala in Monte Carlo where the instrument was presented for the first time, the Prince recalled going as a young boy on a pen-hunting expedition with his father, himself an aficianado of writing jewels.

Mont Blanc is dedicating 51 per cent of the proceeds to the Princess Grace Foundation, the charity supporting young film, theatre and dance artistes established by Prince Rainier in memory of his wife who died in a 1982 car crash. Even before the pens went on sale officially, five had already been snapped up, and before dessert was served at the gala, Mont Blanc CEO Lutz Bethge was able to announce a donation of some US$745,000 the
Foundation.

Some 250 guests from around the world, including Danish supermodel Helena Christensen, who joined Prince Albert at the head table, were treated to an emotionally intense performance by celebrated piano virtuoso Lang Lang, and moving renditions by Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins.

I was expecting the crown from Meseret or Haile. No more surprise since we are Ethiopians familiar with such glories. Anyway, Meseret has laid the foundation for Ethiopian and African women as her name implies. Congratulations Messi ! You deserve it. But you begin my sweet.
